VALUE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE?

It seems to me, despite the nation's need to desperately educate our youth, there remains a question as to how to do so. Our society needs innovation in order to remain competitive and the PhD scientists, whether in medicine, engineering or computers, at our universities are graduating remained primarily foreigners from Asia and India, who are  largely returning to their home countries as they face a uphill battle in coming US citizens. Is it possible that we can make an earlier determination to ensure the next generation will be able to compete in these areas? I think the answer is really in doubt in light of our elementary and secondary educational system which needs to be fixed as soon as possible. No longer can we not address the needs of "elite students", those who demonstrate superior intellectual acumen. Instead, we need to nurture and help advance their development. Of course, in the ideal world, a stable home life with a lower national divorce rate would go far in addressing some of the fundamental issues.
